How to Clean & Sanitize Your RV Bedding After Water Damage

How to Clean & Sanitize Your RV Bedding After Water Damage

9th Oct 2024

For RV owners, storms can bring more than just debris—floodwaters and humidity can affect the cleanliness and safety of your space, especially your bedding and mattress. To help you recover, we’ve put together tips to clean and sanitize your RV bedding and mattress after exposure to excess moisture so your space is fresh, safe, and ready for your next adventure.

1. Remove Bedding Immediately

Strip ALL bedding from your mattress. If the bedding was exposed to moisture, it’s critical to act quickly. Floodwater can carry contaminants that may pose health risks, so cleaning and disinfecting are a priority.
Pro Tip: Wear gloves and avoid shaking bedding to prevent spreading mold spores and contaminants.

2. Wash Bedding in Hot Water

Wash everything in hot water to kill any bacteria or mold spores. Add a disinfecting agent, like a bit of white vinegar or a laundry-safe disinfectant, to your wash cycle to help clean and sanitize your bedding.
Pro Tip: Use the highest safe water temperature for your bedding materials. Refer to care instructions on the label.

3. Sanitize Your Mattress and Treat Mold Immediately

If floodwaters reached your mattress, it’s crucial to dry and sanitize it.
  • Vacuum: Use a HEPA-filter vacuum to remove dirt and mold spores.
  • Disinfect: Lightly spray a mixture of water and white vinegar or disinfectant, then wipe with a damp cloth. Avoid soaking the mattress.
  • Treat Mold: Scrub any mold with a hydrogen peroxide solution, wiping it clean and drying thoroughly. If the mold is extensive, you may need to consider replacing your mattress, as mold can deeply embed in the layers and pose serious health risks.
  • Dry Completely: Dry in direct sunlight if possible, or use fans and dehumidifiers indoors.
Pro Tip: Consider using a quality waterproof mattress cover in the future to prevent floodwater from penetrating your mattress.

4. Eliminate Odors

Floodwaters and humidity can leave behind a musty odor. After you’ve cleaned and disinfected your mattress, sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the surface and let it sit for several hours to help neutralize any remaining odors. Once it has absorbed the smells, vacuum it up for a fresh finish.

5. Dry Pillows and Soft Items

Wash synthetic pillows on a gentle cycle with hot water and disinfectant. Dry completely to avoid mold. Foam pillows should be spot cleaned and air-dried.

6. Prevent Future Moisture Issues

After storms, moisture can linger in your RV, causing long-term problems. Consider using moisture absorbers, a dehumidifier, or even desiccant packets inside your RV to maintain a dry environment and prevent future mold growth.
Pro Tip: A breathable mattress underlayment promotes airflow and prevents moisture buildup.

7. Inspect for Long-Term Damage

Even after cleaning, it’s important to inspect your bedding, mattress, and other soft items for signs of long-term damage from water or mold. If any items continue to hold onto a musty odor or show signs of mold growth, it may be time to replace them.
