Choosing the right mattress is key to a restful night's sleep. Here's a quick guide to help you navigate the options for home mattresses:

Common Mattress Sizes

  • Twin: Ideal for young children or smaller rooms. Measures 39" x 75".
  • Full (Double): The smallest size that can comfortably sleep two adults. Measures 54" x 75".
  • Queen: The most popular choice for couples. Measures 60" x 80".
  • King: Offers ample space for couples. Measures 76" x 80".

Extended Mattress Sizes

  • Twin XL: Adds extra length for taller individuals, measuring 39" x 80". This is a common size for college dorm rooms and hospital beds.
  • Three-Quarter Full: Great for solo sleepers or couples who like to snuggle. Slightly narrower than the full size bed, it measures 48" x 75". This is a common size for antique beds.
  • Full XL: Longer than a standard full, measuring 54" x 80".
  • Olympic Queen: Wider than a standard queen, measuring 66" x 80".
  • California King: Provides extra length for taller sleepers, measuring 72" x 84".

  • Texas King: 98" x 80"
  • Extra Wide King: 108" x 80"
  • Super Wide King: 120" x 80"
  • Family Bed: 144" x 80"
  • Wyoming King: 84" x 84"

Bunk Bed Mattress Sizes

  • Twin over Twin Bunk: This is the most traditional size bunk bed featuring a twin bed over another twin bed. Both mattresses measure 39" x 75".
  • Twin over Full Bunks: This configuration features a full size bed on the bottom and a twin size bed on top. The twin over full bunk will require one 39" x 75" mattress and one 54" x 75" mattress.
  • Twin over Queen Bunks: Growing in popularity, the twin over queen bunks allow ample room on the bottom for co-sleeping with a twin size bed on the top. For a twin over queen bunk, you'll need one 39" x 75" mattress and one 60" x 80" mattress.

Memory Foam vs. Hybrid Mattresses

  • Memory Foam:
    • Adapts to body shape for personalized support.
    • Reduces pressure points and motion transfer.
    • Often made from layers of different foam densities for support and comfort.
    • Can retain heat, though many models (including ours) now feature cooling technologies.
  • Hybrid:
    • Combines memory foam with foam encased individually pocketed coils for added support.
    • Offers a balance of contouring comfort and traditional springy feel.
    • Typically has better airflow than pure memory foam, helping to keep cool.
    • Suitable for a wide range of sleeping positions due to its versatility.
